you podcasts, you love from people you trust.
00:06 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
This is twit this is twit news episode 406 with rosemary orchard and micah sergeant, recorded monday, september 9th 2024. Apples it's glow time event almost glow time. Yes, it is almost time for Apple's it's Glow Time event. As we record this show on Monday, september 9th 2024, we are mere minutes away from Apple's event. Very excited to be here, I'm Micah Sargent and I am joined by the one, the only, rosemary Orchard, my fellow co-host on iOS today. Hello, rosemary.
00:50 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Hi, micah, I'm really excited to be here. Maybe we're going to get a glow up, maybe things are just going to glow in the dark, who knows? Hopefully we're going to be able to see the changes at any rate.
01:01 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yes, we are both very excited about this event, very excited to see what Apple announces. Of course, one expects that this is an event where Apple will announce new iPhones. When Apple announces new iPhones, this is also typically the time when they announce new, when it typically announces new Apple Watches and it typically announces some well, I shouldn't say typically it sometimes announces updates to its sort of peripheral hardware like AirPods, and all of those are rumored to be featured at this event A complete upgrade, update of the iPhones, potentially with a new button, the capture button, some updates to the AirPods line and, as we mentioned before, some updates with the Apple Watch. Rosemary, you had pointed out that this sort of marks the 10 years of Apple Watch it does. How big of a change do you think that we'll see with this Apple Watch?
02:09 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I don't know. I'm wondering if maybe we're going to get a bit more independence from the iPhone and that they're going to be focusing more on the software improvements, because hardware-wise I think they can only change so much without changing the lugs where the straps attach and so on. And we did have a last minute rumor from Mark Gurman that we're not going to see a new apple watch ultra at this event, which to me, considering it's the 10th anniversary, would. There would have to be a serious flaw in the apple watch ultra to pull announcing it at this point. You know they could potentially just push it out and say it's not going to be available for another month. That's what I would be expecting them to do, assuming that it's shippable. But I guess we're going to have to see in a couple of minutes.
02:46 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, we're, as my clock suggests, one minute or less until the event begins. Apple typically starts with a little video of us kind of flying over Apple event headquarters in Cupertino, and so we shall see if that's where we kick things off. Uh, with the event taking place in the steve jobs theater, jason snell, co-host of mac break weekly, is boots on the ground there at the event, and so I am looking forward to hearing about his experience, and it looks like we are getting underway here.
03:28 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yeah, the Apple website has just changed to Be Right Back, so we should be getting started about now.
03:33 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Awesome. Jason Snell should be here with us tomorrow for MacBreak Weekly, so you'll be able to hear about his experience at Apple Park and at the event. So let's see if this is this the zoom in. Are we zooming in? Are we going to start or are we going to fall back out? You know Apple always picks great music for its introductions. Here this is different from what we've seen before. I think. Very pretty visualizers going on. I kind of want this as a wallpaper, I mean as a screensaver.
04:14 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I mean, maybe we're going to get that as a screensaver on the iPhone, who knows?
04:17 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Ooh, iPhone screensaver when it's in standby. Here we go. Da-da-da stand by, here we go.
04:27 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
Da, da, da Morning Duke Vaporize Raise a song Light near my eyes. I feel alive.
04:45 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I believe in I'm kicking things off with apple watch features, as well as some iphone and airpods features like calling 911 using airpods pro yeah, and be tapping to do things with the Apple Watch by tapping your first finger and your thumb together, things like that, which is pretty cool.
05:32 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It's very much a get up and go sort of event.
05:36 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I'm wondering if they're gonna be offering more accessibility related tech something to do with hearing aid integration, potentially. Accessibility-related tech something to do with hearing aid integration potentially? I definitely feel like dancing. I'll say that yeah.
05:51 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Did not like how he was using that broom. It's not a push broom. That's stressing me out.
05:58 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
They're doing it for the looks, they're not doing it for the effectiveness of the cleaning. Micah, come on.
06:10 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
You know, if he was using it to clean an AirPods podge we would be worried. Yeah, this is true. Uh, they're showing how the apple watch can be used to uh manage and monitor atrial fibrillation, how the ecg can be used. Uh, of course they're not making mention of the pulse oximeter, given that the oxygen detection is still in contention. Mark Gurman, during Tech News Weekly, suggested that he believes the Apple Watches will feature still the hardware for oxygen detection but will not, of course, be enabled. It was kind of a question of whether they would just take it out in this round or if they keep it in with the hopes that that would eventually be enabled. It was kind of a question of whether they would just take it out in this round or if they'd keep it in with the hopes that that would eventually be settled.
06:49 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Well, considering most people don't upgrade their devices every year. If I were them, I'd keep the hardware in if they could Welcome to Apple.
06:54 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Park, absolutely.
06:55 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Today, we're going to talk about Apple Watch, airpods and iPhone and the profound impact these products are making in our lives. Thanks to their advanced technologies and seamless integration of hardware, software and services, they deliver experiences powerfully and intuitively, helping us stay healthy, connected, productive and entertained. For years, artificial intelligence and machine learning have been essential in delivering so many of the features and experiences you love. In June, we launched Apple Intelligence, our powerful new personal intelligence system, which will have an incredible impact. Today, we have exciting announcements to share about Apple Watch and AirPods, and we are thrilled to introduce the first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple intelligence and its breakthrough capabilities. Let's start with Apple Watch.
07:56
Apple Watch has deeply impacted the lives of millions of people around the world. It's helped them stay active, healthy and connected right from their wrist, and it's helped save countless lives along the way. I receive messages every day from users telling me how Apple Watch makes their lives better in ways both big and small. The impact Apple Watch has made on so many people around the world is the result of constant innovation. Every year, we add features and capabilities that, not long ago, would have seemed impossible to fit into a single device, let alone one small enough to wear on your wrist. Today, we're building on the advanced technologies pioneered with Apple Watch to make it even more useful, essential and intelligent, and we're doing it all in this beautiful new design.
08:54 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
New design. Ooh okay, I don't remember him being so shouty in past events. He's really. He was much more. He was projecting, but you could kind of hear the strain of the-.
09:04 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Maybe they had a last minute audio issue in Apple Park. I don't know if that bit's live or not.
09:12 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Here we see the liquid metal coming together to create the iPhone or the Apple Watch.
09:18 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yeah, it's still got a digital crown. Seems to be a very similar shape and it still has a heartbeat, or it can read a heartbeat, I'm guessing still has this on the back side button still there introducing apple watch series 10 with our biggest display and thinnest design ever.
09:48 - Tim Cook (Announcement)
Here's Jeff, to tell you all about it.
09:51 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Bigger screen, thinner I mean if they did last-minute pull one of the Apple Watches, it could explain why he's so shouty because they had to do a last-minute drop-in recording to replace it so.
10:02 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Good point, as expected, the wonderful Jeff Williams COO.
10:07 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
And the display is central to everything you do with it, from discreetly checking the time to scanning a notification, to a quick glance at your workout metrics. How easily you can read the screen is crucial. That's why, for Series 10, we developed the largest and most advanced display ever.
10:27
for Apple Watch, it's the biggest wearable display we've ever built, even slightly bigger than Apple Watch Ultra, and compared to previous generations, it has up to 30% more screen area. With a larger screen, you can increase the font size without sacrificing content, and you can see an additional line of text and apps like messages, mail or news. It also makes it easier to type a message, enter your passcode or pause your workout. Both the display and the case have more rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio, which makes Series 10 appear softer, sleeker and more streamlined. The front crystal of Series X is made of durable Ionix glass and extends further down the sides of the case, creating an expansive top view. Under the front crystal is Apple's first-ever wide-angle OLED display. Each pixel has been optimized to emit more light at wider angles. Often, you look at your watch from an angle like while you're walking, typing on a keyboard or when your hand is resting in your lap, so we made the display on Series 10 up to 40% brighter when viewed from an angle, which improves visibility oh, that's nice.
11:45
It makes it easier to read your watch with a quick glance. We also developed wide-angle OLEDs to be extremely power efficient, which allows the display to update once a second and always on mode, instead of just once a minute. Now a ticking second's hand is visible even when your wrist is down. It makes Series 10 feel more alive all of the time.
12:09 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
You can see the effect on the watch.
12:11 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
A bold new watch face that takes full advantage of the large display, filling the screen with color second by second. It was designed to complement Series 10's new aluminum finishes, starting with Jet Black. It's our first ever polished aluminum finish for Apple Watch. This deep glossy black was developed specifically for series 10. The case is made from our durable aluminum alloy and polished using silica nanoparticles until the surface achieves a reflective shine.
12:46 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
Then it goes through a 30-step anodization process which bonds organic dye to the housing at a molecular level.
12:57 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Joining Jet Black is a beautiful warm rose gold, along with our ever-popular silver aluminum. The comfort of Apple Watch is so important because you wear it day and night. For anything you wear continuously, comfort is a function of size, shape and weight, and on your wrist, every millimeter and every gram matters. That's why we pushed the limits of technology to make Series 10 the thinnest Apple Watch ever. At just 9.7 millimeters, it's nearly 10% thinner than Series 9, a significant reduction considering how compact Apple Watch already is. Achieving this radically thinner profile required further miniaturization of several already tiny internal modules, like the SIP digital crown and speaker.
13:47
The speaker system was completely re-engineered to be 30% smaller without any compromise to acoustic performance and for the first time on Apple Watch, you can play media like music or podcasts directly through the speaker.
14:02 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Oh no, oh no, you don't have your AirPods in. Fabulous Also contributing to torture me on public transit. Fabulous, also contributing to.
14:06 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Series 10's thinner design is an innovative metal back that fully integrates the antenna into the housing itself, combining two layers into one. Now we have to test how our podcasts sound on Apple Watch A thin oscillation split tuned for Apple Watch for great cellular performance, and it's bonded to a watertight layer that maintains 50-meter water resistance, so you can still shower swim and surf.
14:29 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
There's got to be a speaker in there that you can use for phone calls.
14:31 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
The new metal back also accommodates a larger and more efficient charging coil, making Series 10 the fastest charging Apple Watch ever. Oh, that's nice and just 30.
14:41 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Apple Watch.
14:41 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Okay, that is really nice, you can get up to 80% battery, making it easier to charge your watch whenever it fits into your day. The smaller speaker, metal back and other innovations make Series 10 not only thinner but also lighter weight. Aluminum cases weigh up to 10% less than the previous generation, and we're introducing another lightweight material in a gorgeous new finish polished titanium.
15:10
this year grade five titanium stainless steel with titanium's remarkable strength to weight ratio. Series 10 weighs almost 20 percent less than the stainless steel series uh, given the case is made of aerospace grade titanium that's polished to a mirror-like shine, then PVD coated in one of three stunning colors.
15:33 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I wonder if it's also about what you see allergies. The amount of nickel and titanium is considerably lower on non-existent usually, and we've updated the elegant.
15:39 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Milanese loop and classic link bracelet to perfectly match the titanium finishes. The uninterrupted lines of case back and watch band celebrate the beauty of metal. To complete the metallic look, the Reflections face has an intricate, shimmering dial that reacts to your movements and transitions gracefully to always-on mode. The sleek shape, expansive display, sapphire front crystal and sophisticated finishes make Series 10 the most refined expression of Apple Watch yet.
16:14 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Titanium Series 10 joins the lineup as our next carbon-neutral product.
16:20 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's made with 95% recycled titanium and manufactured with 100% renewable electricity. And to reduce emissions from transportation, we prioritize non-air shipping. Of course, inside Series 10 is custom Apple silicon, which powers all the incredible capabilities of every Apple watch. The new S10 Zip is designed for performance, power, efficiency and intelligence. It's only six.
16:48
Its four-core neural engine quickly processes machine learning tasks and uses advanced transformer models to power the intelligent features you already use every day, like Double Tap On-Device, siri Dictation and Automatic Workout Detection. Plus, it enables crash detection and fall detection, which uses machine learning to identify the motion signatures and impact forces that occur during slips, trips and falls. Hopefully that's improved, because I used to get those notifications a lot.
17:18 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Series 10 uses a new neural network to suppress background noise. It could do so. You sound clear and crisp on the other end. Always get that.
17:24 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
But it could do, it definitely can trigger a fast one.
17:26 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
So I just checked. The iPhone 15 Pro has six cores.
17:32 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's got a 16-core neural engine, but it's got six CPU cores so this is pretty powerful for a watch when you need them. The new Photos Face uses machine learning to identify, score and curate the best photos from your library. And the Translate app comes to Apple Watch using machine learning for speech recognition and rapid translation. Of course, intelligence powers many of the health features on Apple Watch as well. Here's Sumbul to tell you more.
18:07 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Certainly, the idea that you'd be listening to anything from the Apple Watch falls in line with what you suggested, rosemary, of separating the devices even more With the compact design of Siri 10 plus the fastest charging ever.
18:17 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's so easy to wear your Apple Watch day and night, unlocking insightful and intelligent features for your health. Your Apple Watch can remind you to take your medications and alert you to loud environments that could impact your hearing.
18:30
It can also notify you if your heart shows signs of atrial fibrillation, and we hear stories nearly every day about the impact these irregular rhythm notifications have had in helping users seek and receive critical care While you're sleeping. Apple Watch can measure wrist temperature to detect when you likely ovulated. Identify changes in your daily health status with the new Vitals app and determine how much time you spend in each sleep stage.
18:58
And now Series 10 can also alert you to a major health condition that impacts over a billion people worldwide sleep apnea. It's a potentially serious condition where breathing stops repeatedly and causes disrupted sleep. Sleep plays such a vital role in our overall health and well-being.
19:16 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
This is huge because it usually takes a lot of time, money and commitment. More irritable.
19:28 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
If left untreated sleep apnea can also have significant consequences on your health, including increased risk to hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiac issues, but one of the biggest challenges is that 80% of people with sleep apnea are undiagnosed.
19:41 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Because, even if you go, you don't sleep like you normally would in one of those labs no because you're not at home in your own bed with your environment.
19:49 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
It could be environmental factors affecting your sleep as well.
19:52 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
You can view your nightly values in the health app which can also help you understand the restfulness of your sleep. Every 30 days, Apple Watch will analyze your breathing disturbance data and notify you if it shows consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea. As always, your data is secured in the health app, which will tell you when sleep apnea may have occurred and provide education on the importance of speaking with your healthcare provider.
20:16 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It does of course, require wearing your Apple Watch to bed, which I have yet to do.
20:23 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
An extensive data set.
20:25 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Fortunately-grade sleep apnea tests.
20:29 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
It was then validated in a clinical study unprecedented in size for sleep apnea technology. We are so excited about the incredible impact this feature can make for the millions of people living with undiagnosed sleep apnea.
20:41 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
We expect clearance from the FDA and other regulators very soon with availability in over 150 countries and regions this month, including the US, Europe and Japan, In addition to Series 10, sleep apnea notifications will also be available on Series 9 and Ultra 2.
20:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Series 9 and Ultra 2 also get it Okay.
21:01 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Excellent. My mom will be getting that then, because she'll be getting my watch this year.
21:13 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Apple Watch helps keep you active. The activity rings motivate millions of people every day to take a walk, hit the gym or go for a ride, and the redesign of Series 10 makes it even better for workouts. Runners, cyclists and athletes of all kinds will appreciate the lighter weight and it's easy to read your workout metrics on the bigger display. This year, series 10 gets a built-in depth gauge and a water temperature sensor making it even better for activities in and around the water.
21:45
The depth app launches automatically when submerged, allowing you to see depth to six meters, or about 20 feet, along with water temperature, which is also visible in the workout app for pool and open water swims.
22:03 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I was cleaning out a farm trough of water for sheep this year, Hewis Outdoors is bringing their Christianity Plus app to Series 10.
22:09 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Oh, you're diving, aren't you Turned?
22:11 - Mikah Sargent (Host)

For activities like surfing, fishing or simply playing in the waves. We're introducing the Tides app in WatchOS 11. Yes, oh, that's great.
22:28 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Wow, this is great.
22:29 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Including rising, falling, high and low tides, sunrise and sunset, and there's data for coastlines all over the world. That's really a feature for obviously fun things, but also for safety reasons as well For kayakers, canoers and rowers. It's a beach here in the world and people get stuck all the time and have to be rescued. And with the Paddle Logger app, you can create a float plan and rely on haptic feedback from your Apple Watch to stay on course.
22:51 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
That's cool, so helping stay on course when you're paddling.
22:57 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)

37:44 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I reckon it's hearing aid integration or a certification of some kind which my dad would be interested in.
37:51 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
She's the VP of health.
37:56
Hearing is an essential part of how so many of us communicate and experience the people and the world around us, but hearing loss can significantly affect these important experiences and relationships, impacting your quality of life. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.5 billion people are living with hearing loss. If left unaddressed, this can affect your short and long-term health, including increased risk of cognitive decline, falls and social isolation, which contributes to depression, and all of these factors can impact your longevity as well. Over the last several years, we've developed important building blocks in this space, with the Noise app on Apple Watch, headphone audio exposure on iPhone and the Apple Hearing Study. With over 160,000 participants, it's one of the largest studies of its kind. Through this work, we've gained deeper insights into the issues surrounding hearing health, which inspired us to do even more. So today, we're introducing three major health features for AirPods Pro 2, focused on prevention, awareness and assistance. Let's start with prevention. One in three people are regularly exposed to environmental noise levels that could impact their hearing.
39:15 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
To put this into perspective.
39:17 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
There are all kinds of sounds that can be concerning in daily life, whether that's commuting, mowing the lawn at home, or when you're headed to that next event.
39:28 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I mean, of course, no matter how great AirPods Pro are, if you're doing something in a really loud environment, you need appropriate earplugs that are designed to fit.
39:35 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
We're adding hearing protection to AirPods Pro on by default across listening modes. The ear tips help to provide passive noise reduction Whether you're attending a live show or playing at the show. Machine learning on the H2 chip actively reduces louder, more intermittent noise at 48,000 times per second. Hearing protection can help you across a variety of loud environments, preserving the entire dynamic range of what you're listening to. Of loud environments preserving the entire dynamic range of what you're listening to. Next, let's talk about awareness, because hearing loss often worsens gradually. It can be really hard to detect and even with tests that are available, 80% of adults in the US have not had their hearing checked in the last five years. To give you insight into your hearing health, we're introducing a clinically validated hearing test with your AirPods Pro and iPhone. It's a simple five-minute check you can take from the comfort of your own home. All you need to do is tap the screen when you hear a series of tones at different volumes and frequencies.
40:38 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
The hearing test builds on learnings from the Apple Hearing Study and is developed using large-scale real-world data.
40:42 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I've only ever done it in like an actual like in a clinical from the Apple Hearing Study and was developed using large-scale real-world data and it was validated against the clinical gold standard hearing system's own audiometry.
40:50 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Once you're done, you'll see easy-to-understand results in a personalized hearing profile and, like the rest of your health data, these results will be stored privately and securely in the Health app, where you can take regular tests, learn more about hearing loss and share your results with your healthcare provider. Learning if you have hearing loss is a critical step to getting the hearing assistance you need, which can often be challenging due to high cost and a limited audio experience. And global research shows hearing loss often goes untreated. In fact, the Apple Hearing Study revealed that a staggering 75% of people diagnosed with hearing loss often goes untreated. In fact, the Apple Hearing Study revealed that a staggering 75% of people diagnosed with hearing loss haven't received the assistive support they need.
41:32
So we are really excited to announce this fall.
41:35 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I mean, my dad has recently realized he definitely does have hearing loss, but he's had multiple tests over the last couple of years.
41:42 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
He's been told every time.
41:43 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's fine that there's nothing wrong with his hearing hearing, but he definitely can't hear everything. After you take a hearing test, your AirPods Pro are transformed into a personalized hearing aid, boosting the specific sounds you need in real time like parts of speech or elements within your environment for your.
41:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
AirPods Pro and.
42:00 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
I'm going to try and get my dad to get a new AirPods Pro, because I think he will benefit from those until he can get a proper hearing test and hearing aids allow you to hear your surroundings better, to help keep you safe and connect you with people nearby, so it's even easier to hear and engage in conversations.

45:15 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And there was the showing of the new caption button. Yeah, it seems like it.
45:18 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Okay, so this is coming to the regular iPhone as well, not just the Pro. So I guess the action button's going to be the distinguisher between them. Oh, cameras.
45:28 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Gurman said that every phone is going to have every button.
45:31 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Okay, I mean, that would be good.

48:28
Yeah, with industry-leading processing power and efficiency, apple Silicon is at the heart of new capabilities, starting with Apple Intelligence. Here's Sri to tell you all about it.
48:47 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Running powerful experiences like Apple Intelligence on device. Running powerful experiences like Apple Intelligence on device needs a chip with substantial, high-performance compute. It needs memory to store large models and bandwidth to access them quickly and, of course, phenomenal energy efficiency. So we're bringing our latest breakthroughs and jumping two generations ahead, from A16 Bionic in iPhone 15 to A18, our brand new chip created specifically for iPhone 16. A18 features an upgraded 16-core neural engine that is optimized for running large generative models. This neural engine is up to two times faster for machine learning.
49:27
Sounds like this guy has permanently damaged his vocal cords. We've also upgraded A18's memory subsystem, including 17% more system memory bandwidth. This is critical to give the chip the fastest, most efficient access for generative models as well as drive the performance of Apple Intelligence.
49:46
A18 is built using second-generation 3nm technology. This 3nm technology has even smaller transistors that are faster and more energy efficient. A18 has our latest generation 6-core CPU with 2 performance cores and four efficiency cores. These are critical as they're used in nearly every experience on iPhone, including Apple Intelligence. It is up to 30% faster than the CPU in iPhone 15 and up to 60% faster than the CPU in iPhone 12. And thanks to our design and the latest transistors, the CPU is more energy efficient than A16 Bionic and can deliver the same performance using 30% less power.
50:34 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Wow 30% less power. This CPU is faster than all the competition.
50:37 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
That is pretty great.
50:38 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Challenging even high-end desktop PCs. A18 also features our latest desktop class GPU architecture. This new 5-core GPU plays a huge role in everything from Apple intelligence to camera features and graphics intense games. It is up to 40% faster than the GPU in iPhone 15 and up to two times faster than the GPU in iPhone 15.
51:01 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
So there was a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU and 16-core neural engine in the 15.
51:06 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Delivering the same performance using 35% less power. A18 is in a class of its own, built with our latest silicon innovations to power experiences like Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16. Over to Craig to tell you more about Apple Intelligence.
51:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Here we go. Oh, what's that place called? I forget what this place is called. Your iPhone is the most personal product in your life.
51:44 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's part of so many things that make you you Like your relationships and messages.
51:49 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
You pointed it out to me when you drove me back to San Francisco after I visited the Twix studios.
51:53 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Notes and more. Now we're bringing together that personal context with the power of generative models to deliver intelligence that understands you A name I cannot pronounce and we're doing it in a way that protects your privacy.
52:07 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
So the A17 processor only came in the A17 Pro which was in the iPhone 15 Pro.
52:13 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Got it With the ability to understand and create language as well as images, and take action on your behalf to simplify daily tasks. And each of these powerful capabilities is grounded in your personal context. This is only possible thanks to our unique integration of hardware and software. Apple intelligence draws on the immense power of our silicon to run multiple generative models on the iPhone in your pocket. I appreciate why they've got that particular backdrop, but it also kind of makes Craig's hair look somewhat invisible to me.
52:47 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
I will admit I'm watching it in quite a small bubble on Zoom, so that's my fault.
52:52 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
For more computationally intensive tasks. Apple Intelligence can unlock even more intelligence with Private Cloud Compute. Private Cloud Compute maintains the privacy and security of your iPhone, so again, they try to do as much on device as they can, and when they can't, then they pop it off to the cloud. It runs on servers we've built especially with Apple Silicon.
53:14
Protecting your personal information when accessing server-based intelligence requires a fundamental breakthrough in how these systems are built, and private cloud compute delivers just that. When you draw on Private Cloud Compute, your data is never stored or shared with Apple.
53:30 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yes, Craig's Canadian. The travel on Craig's eyebrows is impressive. He has not had Botox and filler. You can tell that.
53:35 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
And, in a first for the industry, independent experts can continuously verify this privacy promise. This is an extraordinary step forward for privacy and AI Plus. Apple Silicon servers deliver world-class energy efficiency.
53:52 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
And like all our data, centers.
53:53 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
They run on 100% renewable electricity. As part of Apple 2030, our commitment to make Apple carbon neutral across our entire footprint, apple intelligence is integrated throughout the system, across so many of the apps you use day to day. Let's take a look at four ways. Apple intelligence will transform so much of what you do with your iPhone, like how you communicate and express yourself, starting with writing tools.
54:23 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
We're deeply integrating them into iOS, making them accessible virtually everywhere you type, starting with writing tools. So we've seen writing tools.
54:25 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
I've also done an episode of hands-on about writing tools and we've talked about it on iOS today, so you'll be able to rewrite hastily written notes into a polished dinner party. Invite Adjust the tone of that Slack message to your boss to sound a little more professional. Or proofread your latest review on Goodreads before posting it to your fellow bookmarks.
54:44 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
There's some other options as well, where, if you've got some text where it could be a table then you can reformat it as a table and so on and that's really useful.
54:53 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
But I found the rewriting things possibly because it's in American English rather than British English doesn't quite sound right to me.
55:03 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
But it's a nice option at least to get started with this, I've never found any of those to be very good.
55:15 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
I'm glad that they're still talking about the media generation tools because that means that it's not being pushed way back.
55:25 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, that's something that they're working on actively.
55:27 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Yes, this is the AI search tool, and photos.
55:38 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I found this to be really good.
55:39 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's been very useful. It even works for getting straight to a specific moment in a video. You'll also be able to create an entire movie.
55:46 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I can download YouTube videos and use this to actually find what I'm looking for Of whatever you have in mind.
55:52 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Like the kids learning to crochet with Aunt Fiona. Apple intelligence will automatically find relevant photos and videos and smartly arrange them into a storyline. We hope you'll enjoy building your own collection of movies that you can share and relive for years to come.
56:09 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
And watching Apple Vision Pro when you can finally afford it in 10 to 15 years.
56:12 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Now let's talk about how Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16 will help you prioritize and focus on your most essential communication In mail. It'll be easy to quickly survey your inbox. Instead of seeing the first couple lines of your emails, you'll see summaries that convey the most useful information. Your notifications will be summarized too.
56:31 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I don't like the notification summaries, I will say this it has made it you can't turn them off per app, which is good at the top of your stack. Yeah, and that's exactly what I had to do because I was missing messages All throughout our day had to do because I was missing messages all throughout our day and not getting the full context, yes, and a great way to accelerate everyday
56:49 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
tasks is with Siri, and there was a whole discussion going on in messages about it and, oh my God, the messages summary for that was wild.
56:58 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
And, like so-and-so, murdered by so-and-so starting to overthrow the king and I'm there like I don't know if Apple Intelligence knows this is a game?
57:07 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Who's the architect behind the museum of wait? No, not the museum, the Palace of Fine Arts.
57:13 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Bernard Maybeck designed the Palace of Fine Arts with third-party apps and you'll always have the option to type to Siri.
57:20 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yeah, they do that already.
57:20 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
actually Great for those times when you want to make your request a little more discreetly. With its new expansive knowledge about features and settings.
57:29 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Siri will be step-by-step guidance on how to do something on your iPhone.
57:36 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And here's the iOS Today feature. This will be great for everyone, and especially for anyone new to iPhone, and there's so much more to come.
57:46 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Siri will be able to tap into your personal context to help you in ways that are unique to you. This is the stuff I'm waiting for, like pulling up the recommendation for the TV show that your brother sent you last month.
57:53 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I like to watch and Siri will gain on-screen awareness or what's on my calendar.
57:56 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
So when your friend texts you about a new app or what I'm looking at, you'll be able to take hundreds of new actions in your apps, like updating a friend's contact card with his new address or adding a set of photos to a specific album. With Siri's personal context, understanding and action capabilities, you'll be able to simply say send Erica the photos from Saturday's barbecue and Siri will dig up the photos and send them right off. With new ways to express yourself and relive memories, along with tools to help you prioritize and focus so you can get more done. Apple Intelligence is going to transform so much of what you do with iPhone. Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update. The first set of features will be available in beta next month, with more features rolling out in the months to come. We're starting with US.
58:49
English in most regions around the world. We'll add localized English for Australia, canada, new Zealand, south Africa and the. Uk in December.
58:58 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
We're working to expand Apple intelligence to more languages like Chinese.
59:02 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
French.
59:02 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Japanese and Spanish, and we'll be rolling these out next year.
59:03 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Give me a petrol station again, Japanese and Spanish. I'll live with it and we'll be rolling these out next year. And this is just the beginning. As we look ahead, we'll continue to bring more personal intelligence to the apps and experiences that you use every day. Now I'd like to show you something really cool that we've created especially for iPhone 16. Your iPhone is with you everywhere you go, and we wanted to give you the ability to instantly learn about everything you see, is it a drone that carries your iPhone.
59:33
Visual intelligence is just a click away with iPhone 16's new camera control that Kyanne introduced earlier. Let me show you. Suppose you're out for a stroll and you stumble upon a restaurant you haven't been to before. Just click and hold the camera control and point your iPhone. With just a click, boom, your iPhone instantly pulls up restaurant hours ratings and quick options to check out the menu or make a reservation, and you can learn more with just a tap Awesome.
01:00:07
Because, that's using GPS and so on as well, and just click and you can add it to your calendar and, of course, it's details about text on the screen time and date, yeah.
01:00:15 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
location, yeah and it's going to be matching that with other images. And then there's that cute little puppy at the park what kind of dog is that?
01:00:23 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
click. You could just ask the owner. Now you know.
01:00:26 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)

for iPhone is the world's most popular camera. It has profoundly impacted the world by making it effortless for everyone to capture amazing photos and videos. Let's start with a closer look at the camera control. It's designed for an amazing camera experience that brings you new ways to capture your photos quickly and easily. The camera control is easy to use in landscape or portrait.
01:02:07 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
It's flushed to the surface covered by a sapphire crystal with a smooth texture and surrounded by a color matched stainless steel trim the camera control elegantly blends hardware and software.
01:02:20 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
When you click, it launches the camera and once in the camera, you don't need to adjust your grip to take a photo. Just click again so you don't miss the moment. With a click and hold, you can do a quick video recording. The camera control is packed with innovation. A tactile switch enables the click experience. A high-precision force sensor interacts with the taptic engine, ensuring responsive haptic feedback like in a mechanical camera shutter. Additionally, a small multi-pixel capacitive sensor and signal processor under the sapphire crystal recognize touch gestures.
01:02:59
Thanks to this innovative design, the camera control can distinguish between a full click and a lighter press. While you click to take a photo, a lighter press reveals an all-new clean preview that dissolves other UI elements, helping you focus on framing the shot. A light press also brings up a new overlay that allows quick access to useful camera functions. By sliding your finger on the camera control, you can adjust controls like zoom. When you press lightly twice, you can see other controls. Then simply slide to the control you want and press lightly again to select it, like the depth of field to compose a stunning portrait. Apps like Snapchat are also leveraging the camera control to create new experiences.

Iphone 16 also has a phenomenal 48-megapixel main camera that offers incredible flexibility. You can maximize resolution with a 48-megapixel photo with four times more resolution than the camera on iPhone 14. So you can capture fine details in the scene, like this rocky coastline. The main camera image pipeline can also fuse a super high resolution image with an image that's been optimized for light capture by grouping every four pixels into a larger pixel. The result is a 24 megapixel photo that balances image quality, light and detail and a smaller file size. That's great for storing and sharing.
01:04:50 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Computational photography also allows us to flex this main camera beyond its fixed lens.

That takes storytelling on iPhone 16 Pro to the next level.
01:31:47 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Back to you, Jaws Same.
01:31:50 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
These amazing hardware and software innovations take the creative power of iPhone 16 Pro further than ever. We're also taking a big leap forward with audio performance. Iphone 16 Pro brings new hardware, software and intelligence innovations previously unseen on smartphones. Iphone 16 Pro has four studio quality mics for higher quality audio recording. They provide a much lower noise floor, which means you get more true to life audio with reduced noise. This is great for vocal and acoustic recordings, and it makes everything that uses the microphone simply sound better. We're also enabling spatial audio capture during video recording for a more immersive experience when listening with AirPods or watching your spatial videos on Apple Vision Pro or even your home theater setup. The new studio quality mics and spatial audio capture enable creative sound editing with our new Audio Mix feature.
01:32:51
This is an industry first and it's powered by advanced intelligence. Audio Mix uses machine learning to identify and separate background elements from speech and lets you choose from three voice options. Say, people off camera are talking during the capture. No, it's your grandma's bun cakes.
01:33:09 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Pancakes times two.
01:33:10 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Yeah, okay, that's very funny. All right, enjoy. The in-frame mix isolates the voice of the capture. No, it's your grandma's bunk cake. Pancakes times two. Yeah, okay, that's very funny, enjoy. The in-frame mix isolates the voice of the person on camera, so you don't lose that perfect take. Is that what I think it is? No, it's your grandma's bunk cake.
01:33:21 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
Yeah, okay, that's very funny. All right, studio mix gives you the effect.
01:33:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Wow in a professional studio?
01:33:27 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
No, that's incredible.
01:33:28 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Complete with sound-dampening walls effectively eliminating reverb.
01:33:32 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
No, it's your grandma's bunt kicks Pancakes times two.
01:33:34 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Yeah, okay, that's very funny, All right, enjoy. And cinematic mix handles voices like in movies, with the vocal track position in the front. Is that what I think it is?
01:33:45 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
No, it's your grandma's bunt kicks and environmental noises in the surrounding we also have a really cool update to voice memos coming later this year.
01:33:55 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Many musicians already use this app to quickly capture song ideas.
01:34:00 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
Well, now you can layer another track on top of an existing recording.
01:34:05 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Like if you want to sing over a previously recorded guitar track, just tap to layer another track and hit record.
01:34:12 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
Don't close the curtain, don't close, don't close.
01:34:18 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
Voice Mumbles plays the guitar track through the iPhone speakers while simultaneously recording your voice. When you're done, voice Mumbles uses advanced processing to isolate your new vocal recording and cancels the background music, giving you a professional sounding recording without the need for headphones. Okay, musicians are going to love being able to layer ideas and capture high-quality recordings right when inspiration strikes From studio-quality mics to new sound editing.
01:34:53
These audio capabilities are not found on any other smartphone. It's an awesome combination with the new video and photo features. Now let's take an exclusive first look at how iPhone 16 Pro is used to bring the weekend's new song and music video to life.
01:35:11 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
I wonder why one would do this instead of just using external microphones that sound better.
01:35:17 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yeah, I mean like I can imagine, like, if you've just had an idea for like a song, then like, yeah, just being able to like sing over the top of the, or lyrics, like being able to sing over the top of what you recorded earlier.
01:35:27 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, I feel for that, more like when you're shooting video, that I feel for that.
01:35:31 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
More like when you're shooting video.
01:35:33 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, I mean it can be kind of hard to hide microphones sometimes yeah that's true On a person.
01:35:40 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
And also, I could imagine, for film students and so on, if they're already getting an iPhone. That's great that you can do a bunch of this stuff and you don't have to spend as much money investing in hardware. Like, obviously you want to do stuff at the pro level. You're probably going to want pro hardware and this is an iPhone Pro, but it's not pro filming equipment necessarily. The fact that it can do really well is great, but it's still not you know that sort of level.
01:36:06 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, it's not what you'd end up using at the end, unless Apple convinces you to do a music video for the sake of promoting this Cool character to shoot.
01:36:15 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
I worked with him before on different sets. It's hard to miss with him. I love shooting portraits on the iPhone. You could get really close to the subject. It becomes really intimate and with the new photo styles you could dial back contrast and you could punch it up if you need. So it's super helpful to just see it as you're shooting.
01:36:36
Wow, I like these filters, wow, I didn't know I was going to use these filters. I really think the ultra-wide capture is such a cool and unique perspective. I definitely get sharper detail with the ultra-wide lens because of the new 48 megapixels and with camera control, it allows anyone to just access so many of the features. You know your exposure, your focal lengths, photo styles. I want to go darker. You want just exposure.
01:36:59 - Apple Event Voice (Announcement)
Yep. With just a few taps in camera control I can make technical decisions in real time and, if a moment comes up in between, takes we just take out the phone and we just start shooting.
01:37:10 - Apple Speaker (Announcement)
It's in the moment of energy. You know you don't want to break it.
01:37:13 - Apple Event Voice (Announcement)
We can get those moments when we see them, and it won't be just a memory. Two iPhones.
01:37:17 - Apple Event Voices (Announcement)
One Action, and what Small rig Means we have more flexibility to explore color in post.
01:37:24 - Apple Event Voice (Announcement)
The new camera features on the iPhone 16 Pro make it a filmmaking powerhouse. Great take. Wow, you stop thinking about it being an iPhone and you treat it like a normal camera.

01:42:19 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Interesting, the Apple Store is back up, but for me at least, it's still the cached version from before.
01:42:26 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Shot on iPhone edited on Mac. Folks, that is Apple's, it's Glow Time event. Not a whole lot of glowing. I'll say I didn't see much that glued.
01:42:40 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
No bioluminescence.
01:42:42 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, no, bioluminescence added to the titanium. Apple announced pretty much what we had expected based on conversations leading up to this. The Apple Watch Series 10 was announced with a screen that is slightly bigger than the Apple Watch Ultra. It has a wide angle OLED display, which Rosemary and I were both talking about that being a good thing, because oftentimes I know I glance at my watch from the side and it doesn't look as good Fuzzy.
01:43:17
Yeah, it's not as good as it is head on, so this improves 40 percent brighter when it's viewed from an angle always on display. Got a huge jump in refresh rate. Where before it was every minute, it is now or can kind of go between, uh, very quick refresh rates to up to every minute, now it's once a second, so you can at least kind of stay up to date with everything while maintaining that battery life, which is great yes, yeah, it really is, and it's, and you know it's interesting to see.
01:43:51 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I've just been having a quick look. Um, the uh apple watch bands have not changed. So if you've got an apple watch series three or later band, then that should work with the new design of the apple watch as well, which is slimmer. And I'm interested to see how big it looks on my wrist, because the apple watch ultra, by the time you had the lugs from the bands on there, was definitely sticking out out over the width of my wrist, which meant that getting a strap that fit up was non-impossible. So I'm hoping that the new ones aren't going to be too large for me, but I guess we're going to have to see.
01:44:20 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Wow For folks who are watching. We're looking at the difference in the width of the case between the new Series 10 and the Series what is it? 7, 8, 9 of yesteryear. It is quite a bit thinner, which is pretty cool, and of course, the new aluminum option that is, a polished aluminum kind of gives you that premium feel of the stainless steel without needing to have stainless steel, and it's just a ridiculous amount of screen real estate in comparison to Apple watches of before. Um, especially wow, all the way back to the what is that? The series three? Uh, or is that yeah, where the the sides of the screen were square, I forgot about that. Now, yeah, you've got a lot more space to to, uh, spread out.
01:45:07
I love that sleep apnea detection is coming to the Apple Watch Series 10 with the. Actually it comes to Series 9, series 10, and the Ultra 2, using kind of breathing disturbances as a metric and then over time you can learn more about what disturbance, what sleeping disturbances you might have and use that as a means of kind of understanding more. If it's something that you should have tested and improvements to some of the sporty features, like a Tides app, which I was pretty excited about, that will help you keep track of where the tide is, so that you don't get stuck out there and need to be rescued, which is a legitimate concern. Yes, yes, it very much is, so it's need to be rescued, which is a legitimate concern.
01:45:52 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yes, yes, it very much is, so it's good to see that you know they are bringing that to all the devices. So there's a little less differentiation now between the regular Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Ultra, aside from the design, of course, which is still very different, and that Apple Watch Ultra is going to be coming in black.
01:46:08 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And that's it. That's the only change. That's the only change people.
01:46:11 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
It's coming in matte black and a little nice, exactly the same as it was before.
01:46:16 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Uh, so yeah you could pre-order the apple watch uh series 10 and the apple watch ultra 2. Um, well, I mean the new color you can pre-order today. Uh, apple watch series 10 399 is the starting point for the non-GPS, $499 for the GPS. Both of those will be available in stores September 20th, so we'll see that soon. Then, of course, airpods that got a whole sweeping upgrade across the system. The AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation are the two kind of standard models. They now look a lot like the AirPods Pro, except they do not have ear tips. The standard AirPods 4 come with a new charging case. The AirPods 4 has USB-C charging. The AirPods 4 with A and C has wireless charging and a built-in speaker so that you can use Find my to find them. Those are $129 and $179, respectively, with, again, pre-orders today launching on September 20th. Um, anything you were excited about the airpods max uh, they come in purple, they're usbc, that's basically.
01:47:41 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
I didn't really take anything else away from that. I mean, I I love purple, don't get me wrong. But you know what? Blue's fine, I don't I. I only wear them for podcasting because they are, unfortunately for me, not super comfortable. So, yeah, we're gonna have to uh see whether or not people maybe find some hidden features in them. But that purple it's, it's nice, but it's definitely a sort of lavendery lilac-y color rather than purple, purple, purple right it's not a royal purple, it's just exactly sort of a whisper of purple.
01:48:10 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Yeah, AirPods Pro 2, which are already on the market $249. Those are going to feature some new features yes, coming in the fall, including features surrounding prevention, awareness and hearing aid stuff. So with hearing protection, they talked about using the built-in sound detection features to help with noise cancellation and also using the ear tips for passive noise cancellation, of course, kind of combining the two to help protect your ears. Cancellation, of course, kind of combining the two to help protect your ears. Awareness they talked about a new hearing test that is coming in the fall. It takes about five minutes to do. You take the hearing test right at home and it will give you some information about where your hearing is, what's changed over time, because you can take it again, of course, and then use that to kind of inform what things sound like.
01:49:13
Yes, and then, after you take your hearing test, if you do have hearing loss that is significant enough, then the AirPods can kind of be turned into what they call clinical grade hearing aids. They are kind of a software enabled feature that will tune the audio coming through the AirPods from your environment so that it is purpose built for how your sound profile. They showed an individual with hearing loss, listening to their child, kind of wish them a happy birthday. It was a rather touching moment, I thought in the keynote.
01:49:59 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yes, and I think this will be really good for people who, you know, maybe don't have the ability to go and get a hearing test and so on yet, or people that just think, oh yeah, maybe I should test this out and try this and see how it works. And, of course, you know hearing aids are pretty expensive. Leo was mentioning in the chat that you know some of them go up to $7,000 and I suspect they could even go more AirPods Pro. They're not cheap, but they're cheaper than that. So you know, fingers crossed, it'll allow some people to be able to communicate more with others and more efficiently.
01:50:34 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
And then, last but not least, of course, we've got the new iPhones. Certainly not least, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come in some interesting new colors ultramarine teal and pink. They do feature the latest ceramic shield glass, which is great. So they are more drop resistant and will they call it they call it, oops resistant? A big feature across the entire announcement was the new Apple intelligence stuff, but along with that is this new camera control button that is coming to not just the iPhone 16 and 16 plus, but also the pro models. Um, what's interesting is that all of the Apple watches or, excuse me, all of the iPhones all have this new set of buttons the action button and the camera control button. So, regardless of whether you go standard or you go pro, you're going to get that, and I think that's pretty exciting, Rosemary, because more people will be getting that action button.
01:51:47 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yeah, yeah, it really is, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else can be done with the camera control button as well. But the fact that the action button is going to be available for everybody and will be able to be customized by everybody as well and also they mentioned shortcuts in the keynote Woo, that's, that's great. So we're going to have to see how that works for everybody, but I'm hoping it'll be a nice addition for everybody else.
01:52:12 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Absolutely. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max continue to have that titanium outer construction with an aluminum and graphite interior for better conductivity, to kind of help it cool. We talked a little bit about that Some fun new features that are coming by way of the built-in intelligence, including an audio mix feature where when you're recording video, you can sort the audio into kind of different tracks they showed how it's almost like sound profiles into kind of different tracks. They showed how it's almost like sound profiles, and so, depending on how you would be recording it, you could set it for studio, where the room feels more dampened, so that the audio isn't as echoey. You could set it so that it's cinematic, where the tracks that are supposed to be in frame versus the ones that are out of frame are separated a little bit better. And then also in voice memos being able to layer a track over another.
01:53:14
So a lot of um, a lot of people are able to, or like musicians will uh, go ahead and record ideas that they have in the voice memos app, and Apple is aware of that, and so giving them the ability to kind of noodle on some ideas in the Voice Memos app quite easily is something I always look at these phones that feature such powerful technology and I get a little skeptical about how much of it is actually used day to day. Voice Memos is a place this feature is a place where I go. I totally get that. I see that being used. That's going to actually make a difference for people, which I think is pretty neat.
01:54:01 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yes, yeah, it is really interesting. I'm glad that they are talking about bringing new features to voice memos and so on. That app often gets overlooked and I think it is a little bit of an unsung hero. You know, I do personally prefer Just Plus Record, but for things like this in particular, if you're looking to record something that is audio because you want the audio rather than you are dictating and wanting a copy of the audio, then I think that Voice Memos is fabulous and it's getting all these new features. Let's see how it goes and you know, all the apple intelligence integration with this and the fact that apple intelligence is going to be available on the iphone 16 as well as the iphone 16 pro is really nice.
01:54:39 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
So we're gonna have to wait and see there yes, um, there are loads of new features, apple intelligence stuff that uh will kind of see over time.
01:54:49
Loved to see the use of the camera as a tool to give your Apple intelligence more awareness so you can take photos of things and have it tell you about it or have you easily create events.
01:55:03
I think that's going to be very handy. I imagine we'll see even more Apple intelligence played out in a way that is kind of graspable, because, outside of the ability to change your writing to create summaries, that all is easy to grok, I think, as is the ability to create an emoji from just a description, but knowing what it means when Siri and Apple intelligence has awareness of your calendar and your location and your regular habits and whether you're in your car or you're at your house, all of that combining together, I think we won't truly see the power until those features are in our hands. The way that Craig Federighi talked about it was it's coming in the months to come, so we don't know exactly when that's going to be. But some of the visual intelligence features are quote later this year, so we could still, or we will still, see those in 2024, which is exciting.
01:56:09 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Yes, yeah, it is, and you know I'm already testing out the Apple intelligence betas. It seems pretty cool, but I'm definitely appreciative of the fact that they were talking about thermals quite a bit in this. I mean, they primarily talked about it in the gaming section, but my iPhone 15 Pro Max has been getting a little toasty in this iOS 18.1 developer beta, so it's nice to see that they will be working on that as well, which should also, as a bonus, improve battery life.
01:56:34 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
Indeed. Well, folks, there's going to be lots more to talk about. Remember, pre-orders are this Friday for the iPhones. Many of the pre-orders for the rest of the devices are today, so you'll probably want to hop into the Apple store and shop on it, as it were. We'll be talking more about this tomorrow, on Mac break weekly, hopefully with Jason Snell joining us, who can give us a boots on the ground understanding of the event. And a huge thank you to all of you who tuned in today on Twitch for as long as we were there on on all of the other places that we stream, uh, a reminder that we do have a club twittv slash club twit. For $7 a month. You can join the club and doing so gets you access to that discord that uh doesn't seem like it got taken down for any reason, so that's good. Uh stayed up the whole time and a great place to chat with all of us. Rosemary, you have been wonderful today and fantastic, and if folks want to keep up with what you're doing, where should they go to do that?
01:57:37 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
Well, of course, one of the great places you can keep up with me is right here on Twitter at iOS Today. If you're a Twitter member, then you get to watch iOS Today, which is an awesome Twitter-only member show or Twitter member-only show. But other than that, I'm at rosemaryrushercom, which has got links to podcasts, apps, books, etc. That I'm involved in, plus the social media platforms. What about you, Micah? Where can everyone find you?
01:57:59 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
You can find me at Micah Sargent on many a social media network where you can head to chihuahuacoffee. That's C-H-I-H-U-A-H-U-Aco active online. Thanks again for being here today for this Apple's it's Glue Time event. I'll be back later in the week for many a show, as Leo Laporte is on vacation, so be sure to tune in this week for lots of fun, and I'll probably be talking about my Friday, you know, at uh pre-ordering the new iphone.
01:58:33 - Rosemary Orchard (Host)
We'll we'll stay tuned for that I think it's for you there, micah. I've already ordered my apple watch. So I know my apple watch with a plum sports strap is coming, but we're gonna have to wait what?
01:58:41 - Mikah Sargent (Host)
happens with the iphone all right, we'll get ready for that, for sure. Thank you everybody, we'll see you next time. Bye-bye, bye.
